Campaign Update
July 18, 2022
A Message from Sergio A. Maldonado, Sr. Candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction
I send to each of you a warm greeting. I have been so blessed by the enormous and genuine support from the people of Wyoming and the Democratic party. To date I have travelled 3,700 miles around the state and what a beautiful state we have.
I launched our campaign with the statement that, “Education should be evenly and equitably distributed with love to every child regardless of age, gender, race, class, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. That’s what education is about.” As I have spoken with so many, I realize that the citizens of Wyoming truly care about the education of their children from kindergarten through high school and into our community colleges and the University of Wyoming.
I stand in support of the Wyoming Education Association goals and dedication to children and public education. The “WEA is dedicated to working in partnership with parents, community leaders and elected officials to help Wyoming’s students and improve public education.” I will provide the required leadership that Wyoming needs. My goals are reality based; human driven with student success as the goal. I will support our schools and teachers across the state because that is where the magic happens, in the classroom.
As Superintendent of Public Instruction, I will focus on the following:
Equitably fund our schools
School safety first
Support our teachers
Every student succeeds
Public funds for public schools only
Early childhood education for all children
I recognize that there exist numerous variables in our state education, the many school districts, along with the administration of each school district and the lives of our students.
During our campaign I have attended all of Governor Gordon’s statewide RIDE Listening Sessions with four down and two more scheduled. I recognize that Wyoming needs a cultural and educational transformation, a change in values and a change in policy, all to promote the kind of Wyoming we want. When we fail to address the needs of our children, the educational dilemmas that exist, and agree with the status quo we then betray our values.
I am a Democrat and support the notion of communal values, the moral imperative, our collective and mutual responsibilities, and our willingness to stand up to the challenge.
Wyoming achieved statehood in 1890. My relatives have lived here for the past thousand years, I am enrolled Northern Arapaho and Mexican American. My classroom experience dates back twenty-three plus years. The Wyoming Education Association recently endorsed my candidacy for Superintendent of Public Instruction. I have the lived experiences to move Wyoming education forward.
I am reminded of President Barack Obama’s best-selling book, The Audacity of Hope. I too have hope and yes, I will challenge the political status quo and provide the leadership that is needed. I am Wyoming’s Native Son. Peace and Blessings . . .
